IVA FAQs

Check out some of our Frequently Asked Questions below. We are looking forward to your child being an IVA Dragon! If you have any other questions about our program, please follow us on @ivaiusd or even call our front office - (949) 936-5550.

IVA is a full time, online K-6 school and part of Irvine Unified School District.  We are a California Distinguished School, as well as a PTA School of Excellence. Our mascot is Draco the Dragon, and is a symbol of our intelligent, powerful, and confident students, staff and community.

Students can choose between two learning models synchronous or asynchronous to attend live class, daily, via Zoom meetings from home. Students are expected to be prepared to learn, attend online, and participate and be engaged every day.  We also provide many in-person class and school-wide opportunities to build community and encourage socialization among our students throughout the year. We share the campus with College Park Elementary. Click here to watch a video all about our awesome school or here for Kinder info!  At this time, we do not have enrollment numbers for K-1 in the synchronous program.

IVA uses guaranteed and viable standards based curriculum that supports the learning of all essential standards. This is partnered with supplementary coursework created by our IVA teachers and curriculum staff, accessed through Canvas and other online learning management support systems and tools. IVA students also participate in art, science and music as a part of our program. As part of the supplementary curriculum, we also provide instruction around monthly digital citizenship themes to engage our students in thinking about their digital footprint and making positive choices both on and offline.  Students can also check out a Chromebook, document camera, and tech accessories on an as-needed basis.  Students also have access to science, music, library, and innovation lab.

In our synchronous model, the majority of the day is spent in live, synchronous learning time, online with a teacher. Paired with asynchronous independent learning time, students will receive a healthy balance of on versus offline. Also embedded in our daily schedule is time for snack, recess, lunch, and brain breaks. With our asynchronous model, we promote as much flexibility as is possible within the structure of our schedule, and it is more student driven.  Student participation is very important in ensuring they are engaged in the learning and provided with social/emotional support on a daily basis. Our teachers, students, and parent/guardians work together as a school-home team in order to provide students with specifically targeted and supported learning opportunities.

Yes, we have the Dragon C.O.D.E. Our core tenants create the Dragon C.O.D.E. and all students and staff uphold the promise to "Create Community," "Own Your Learning," "Dare to Try," and "Embrace Empathy." These four expectations are a focus of our school culture and woven into everything we do. Students showcasing examples of our C.O.D.E. have the opportunity to earn many exciting and fun ways to be celebrated. Students also have a chance to co-host our weekly Friday videos, watched by the entire school and be an example Dragon to their peers. We also have access to all of our counseling supports and ERC via College Park to ensure all students are encouraged, supported and celebrated.
